Still relatively young for the EDM game, Elly K has already experienced heights many of her seniors never will. She has feathers in her cap in the form of international gigs, being a crowd favourite all around her local stomping ground of Sydney, and now landing in the top 10 of She Can DJ 2012, a feat that can be put in context pretty simply – the other 9 contenders are 5+ years older than her.

The competition itself shows the changing times in the electronic world. Once a male-dominated scene, female DJs and producers are now getting the same respect as their counterparts. We go into this paradigm shift with Elly K, who explains that there was no more reason for the uneven playing field as girls have been making music just as impressive, and in some cases more so, than the dudes.

Where the others might be going back to their usual night club where they act as house DJ, Elly K will be packing her bags and shipping off overseas for a string of adventures, playing all throughout Europe and the US, but not before putting her head down in the studio, to emerge later in the year with some original material.

Fresh back in Australia after his visit to Chicago for this year’s Lollapalooza Rolling Stone Editor-in-chief Matt Coyte chats with MusicFeedsTV.

Speaking about the new partnership between Local music festival promoters Big Day Out and C3 Presents (organisers of Loolapalooza) Coyte tells us how the event can be considered a preview of what we might be in store for early next year. Black Sabbath and Band of Horses were personal musical highlights for Coyte.

“It was like a preview of the Big Day Out. It was interesting to see how they run their festival and imagine how that’s going to translate to the Big Day Out. I think that will be quite exciting come January”

When it comes to content programming for the Rolling Stone magazine Matt Coyte explains the strategy saying:

“We juggle between new albums, new artists and classic artists. We’re kina looking forward to the 25^th Anniversary of Bad by Michael Jackson, people still have a lot of love for him and there’s out takes and stuff that people won’t have heard before and remastered tracks and stuff. “

Despite a global transition towards digital content Matt Coyte believes that the magazine edition of Rolling Stone will be around for plenty of time to come but concedes eventually it will die out.

“It will take a lot longer then people think because there’s still a lot of people out there. We haven’t really seen any drop in Rolling Stone but there are things that magazines offer that websites don’t offer. Like long-form reads, you know really in depth material that people just don’t want to spend that amount of time scrolling down on a page. There’s still something tactile about magazines and I think it will take a long time for people to give up on that. But you know, eventually they will.”

The next step in the evolution of the magazine sounds interesting:

“One of the most important things for us with Rolling Stone is trying to keep people engaged in the magazine and not sending them online. But we understand that people want rich media as part of their experience. So we’re working on having smart phone and iPad interactivity with the printed magazine. So we’ve just started a, using a program called viewer which we have an app for, which you hold over the magazine and photos come to life, turn into video, you hear as you’re reading the reviews pages you hearing streams of the tracks. You have photo galleries coming off and expanding people’s experience of what the magazine is. For us that’s the way of giving people what we think they want without sending them somewhere else to get it.”

With an AIR, J Award and a previous candidate of the prestigious Australian Music Prize (Best Album 2007) Tim Levinson, aka. Urthboy is keeping himself busy as a label manager at Elefant Traks. His transition from musical artist to management came out of necessity and was never a considered career move.

“We never really weighed up those considerations, it was just, had to be done. Jobs that needed to be done were done. That was all that we thought about. We just learned along the way.”

As a songwriter for The Herd Tim is excited for this years appearance at Peats Ridge Festival which will be a first for the band. “Peats Ridge will be good. Funnilly enough we’ve never done Peats Ridge before so it will be good. I think everyone is pumped about it!”

However when it comes Urthboy’s career he is less sure about what the future might hold saying:

“I have no intention of being the granddad rapper. I don’t really set any clear ideas about what I want to do. I have as much interest in the creative side of things and writing, and music and touring as I do working behind the scenes with groups like Horror Show and Hermitude and the acts on our label and signing new acts and being able to be involved in their careers and helping them to do what they want to do.”

In terms of new signings and news from Elefant Tracks Tim was tight lipped but admits that new musical acts are the lifeblood of the label.

“We are always looking at new artists, we need it. It’s essential to keep Elefant Tracks fresh. And it also keeps everybody on their toes and we have a real emphasis at Elefant Tracks of making it clear that we’re not just a label that all these different artists exist separately on. Everybody is connected.”

Peats Ridge festival organiser Damian Cunningham sat down with MusicFeedsTV to talk about his involvement and give background information about the event. Their first wave of bands on the line-up at this years festival got music lovers excited and coming in September is a second announcement of additional acts to also feature at the icon New Years festival.  Damian is personally excited for John Buttler Trio, The Herd, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings but hints at some very big surprises still to come for Peats Ridge festival.

“Peats Ridge itself was started 9 years ago. We’re in our ninth year now and Matt Grant was the founder and owner of Peats Ridge festival. His premise initially was to try and educate people about sustainability and about greening in every aspect to their lives, and to do it in a method or transference through music and art and performance so that a festival itself could run itself on an eco principal and a green principal.  But also attendees at a festival could adopt as little or as much as they wanted from what they were learning. They could attend the festival and just by absorption see what was happening from a greening point of view.”

When it comes to the next big thing on this year’s line up Damian feels it would be remiss of him to guide festivalgoers saying:

“I think that’s more for the attendees to find. I mean yeh we do have a reputation of giving the opportunities for new and emerging acts to perform at the festival. We’re lucky enough, we program on average about a 156 acts that perform over the 3 days of the festival. I think it’s the opportunity for the acts to play that gives them the launch into some sort of public sphere for them. Sometimes a lot of acts now they don’t get the opportunity to perform at large music festivals. So I think its more for the public to discover and find.”

With the media industry going through massive changes in the past few years MusicFeedsTV caught up with Sally Howland at the AIM “Together Now” music industry conference. Sally is Head of Member services at APRA AMCOS and talked with us about the future directions of the industry. Sally believes new streaming services are a good thing creating another channel for consumers to access music.

“What that means for artists and song writers is another revenue stream. So it can only be a good thing.”

However there is some caution currently from the industry because in Australia it is yet to be seen how streaming services might compromise the current digital download landscape.

“If you look at what’s happening overseas it currently isn’t cannibalising that market. So what tends to happen is that as new access channels come on board they tend to sit side by side without cannibalising other markets.”

The old issue of privacy is still at the forefront of discussions within APRAM AMCOS. With progress slowly yet painfully being made.

“What we’re trying to do is to come to some kind of industry led agreement that sees the ISPs take up some responsibility over what is happening through their channels, because that’s where piracy is happening. I think it would be fair to say that those conversations have been long and arduous, and we’re not yet at an agreement but it may well be that the government will step in and there will be legislation around that.”

Sally Howland believes similar legislation to that employed in New Zealand will be enforced here in Australia. The ‘three strikes and your out’ method of identifying then shaping broadband services provided to individuals is seen as potentially the most effective technique to change consumer behaviors.

“I think the dicsussions occurring in Australia are more about trying to change consumer’s behavior. So instead of cutting off services it would be about reducing your access. So reducing your broadband speed for example and by doing that it’s hopeful that you would change consumer’s behavior about using pirated services.”

Sally also talked about 360 deals and implications for music artists.

On a massive high from playing a killer packed out show at Splendour In The Grass 2012, The Rubens are keeping on the front foot releasing the 2nd single off their forthcoming debut album ‘My Gun’ on August 4. The Rubens explains the extraordinary journey that took them to New York to record their debut with super producer David Kahne (Paul Mcartney, The Strokes, Regina Spektor, Lana Del Ray).

On a dream run in a short career that has only spanned 18 months, The Rubens tell Music Feeds how they deal with the haters who are cynical that they have been living off the hype of Lay It Down. As Sam puts it “we are more than just Lay It Down“, with the album being dubbed a more thorough exploration of their sound, and delves in a range of different styles.

The Rubens national tour kicks off Thursday 13 September (tickets on sale now), and their Self-Titled debut record is out on September 14 on Ivy League Records.

MusicFeedsTV caught up with Mon Cherie from Sydney rock outfit Kill City Creeps.

Although the band has only been together since 2011 there music is quickly hooking in listeners with their intriguing blend of 60’s psychedelia, 70’s glam rock and a quirky demeanor.

Out of the blue lead singer ‘Daniel Darling’ (formerly of The Dolly Rocker Movement ) emailed Mon with an idea for the band while he was still in Los Angeles. Although playing in another band at the time, Mon thought Kill City Creeps would make a nice side project before things quickly took off for them.

Their debute EP was mixed by Nic Dalton of the Lemonheads who’s music had been a big influence during Mon’s musical upbringing. Already there are 2 new recordings  (a cover and also an original) that will be available to listeners in September 2012.

Kill City Creeps will be performing a live set this Saturday 11th at Newtown’s Vanguard to celebrate the return of the band’s organist who has been in Germany for the last four months.

Also coming up is a festival slot at this year’s Fat As Butter festival to be held on Saturday the 22nd of September in Newcastle.  Further recordings and a potential overseas tour is also on the cards so fans of the band will have much to look forward to in coming months.

Victoria’s Philip Island will again be rockin’ over New Year’s Eve as the Pyramid Rock Festival returns for its ninth year.

Regarded by many local music lovers as a great alternative to Falls Festival, this year’s Pyramid lineup is “proudly, one with majority Australian artist representation”, along with a handful of great international acts.

The first announcement of acts was revealed this afternoon — with US punks Anti-Flag and UK dance crew Friendly Fires leading the international pack.

As for the local talent, 360, Children Collide, Karnivool, Illy and Stonefield will all be there — while Xavier Rudd will set a record by becoming the first artist to play at the festival on four different occasions.

Tickets have been kept at the same prices for the third year in a row, and will go on sale to the general public at 9am on Tuesday, September 4. While we haven’t got pricing information yet, early bird tickets were sold to Pyramid Rock members earlier this year for $195 (2 days) and $231 (3 days) respectively.

The Pyramid Rock Festival will take place from Saturday, December 29, 2012 to Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Philip Island, Victoria.
